Title: State-of-Grid Based Control of Hybrid AC/DC Microgrids

Abstract: The State-of-Grid (SoG) approach introduces a decentralized control concept for hybrid AC/DC microgrids, in which local grid states are used to coordinate distributed components without relying on extensive communication infrastructure. The concept provides a common control framework for different grid-forming and grid-supporting assets and aims to improve stability, power sharing, and energy balancing within the microgrid. This talk presents the fundamental principles of the SoG approach and its application to battery energy storage systems, virtual synchronous machines, and grid-supportive loads. Analytical studies and experimental results from a laboratory-scale hybrid AC/DC microgrid demonstrate the potential of the approach for robust and communication-free operation of future decentralized energy systems.

Bio: Dr.-Ing. Ömer E. is a Research Scientist at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Institute for Automation and Applied Informatics (IAI). His research focuses on control and energy management of hybrid AC/DC microgrids, with particular emphasis on decentralized control, energy storage systems, virtual synchronous machines, and grid-supportive loads. He received his doctorate in 2025 for his work on State-of-Grid based control of hybrid AC/DC microgrids from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
