Speaker:  Petr Vorobev, Senior Lecturer at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
Title: Plug-and-play stability approaches for power grids
Abstract: The talk will present new mathematical approaches for decentralized stability certificates in power grids. Two main approaches will be covered: Lyapunov functions build on simplified models (with application of advanced perturbation theory), and passivity-based methods for plug-and-play architectures. Particular interest will be paid to the recent developments in passivity-based approaches, especially the methods allowing to avoid excessive restrictions on control systems placed by application of classical passivity theory.

Bio: Petr Vorobev received his PhD in theoretical Physics from Landau Institute, Moscow, in 2010. Since then he has been working in the field of power and energy systems, including his postdoctoral appointment at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During his work he has developed a number of new approaches for power systems, that can be especially suitable for systems with inverter-based resources (IBR). He was one of the first to introduce the concept of “plug-and-play” – a set of decentralized conditions, that allow to certify the small-signal stability under arbitrary grid configuration and device connections. His research interests fall broadly under the category of power/energy systems dynamics, stability, and control. Of particular interest are the systems with IBRs and the interaction between power electronics devices and conventional power grids. At present he holds a Senior Lecturer position at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
