Title: Predictive Control Strategies for Electric Traction, Wind Energy, and Smart Grid Applications

Abstract: This presentation aims to introduce the research lines developed by Prof. Alfeu J. Sguarezi Filho at the Federal University of ABC (UFABC), Brazil, focusing on the application of model predictive control (MPC) strategies in advanced electric drive systems. The research explores MPC implementations for various electrical machine topologies applied to electric traction, wind energy generation, photovoltaic systems, and smart grid environments. The main objective is to design predictive algorithms capable of improving dynamic performance, robustness, and energy efficiency while addressing real-time constraints and nonlinearities inherent to power converter-driven systems.

At UFABC’s Power Electronics and Smart Grids Laboratory (LEPS), Prof. Sguarezi and his team develop continuous and finite control set predictive control (CCS-MPC and FCS-MPC) schemes for induction machines, doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs), and grid-connected converters. These efforts include the integration of MPC with renewable energy systems, fault ride-through capabilities, and coordinated control for hybrid smart grid architectures. Experimental validation is carried out through MATLAB/Simulink simulations and real-time implementation on DSP and dSPACE platforms, ensuring a strong connection between theoretical developments and practical applications.

Bio: Alfeu J. Sguarezi Filho (Senior Member, IEEE) received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil, in 2010. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Federal University of ABC (UFABC), where he leads research in predictive control applied to power converters, electric drives, and renewable energy systems. His work focuses on advanced control strategies for electric traction, wind power generation, photovoltaic systems, and smart grids. Prof. Sguarezi Filho has authored over 120 scientific papers in IEEE and Elsevier journals and two books, including Model Predictive Control for Doubly-Fed Induction Generators and Three-Phase Power Converters (Elsevier, 2022). Since 2022, he has been recognized among the top 2% of the world’s most relevant researchers in a global study conducted by Stanford University and Elsevier.
